Istanbul Metro Information
For the unique geographical position of Istanbul, the metro system has two different sets of lines. One set called the European Lines and the other set called the Asian Lines. Out of the 7 European Lines, only 4 are under operation as of now, with 3 more under construction. The Asian Line comprises of 3 lines, 1 line under operation and 2 under construction. This 90 km long network, serves 75 stations presently with 70 more stations under construction. An important means of public transportation since the year 1989, the metro system has an annual ridership of nearly 3.5 million (2015). Although it is operated by Istanbul Ulasim, it is actually under the control of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

M1 route: Yenikapı ↔ Atatürk Airport / Kirazlı. It was opened in 1989 and covered 23 stoppages. Presently, this route is extended further to 0.7 km at Yenikapi end. You can find this route displayed as ‘red line’ in Istanbul Metro map.
M2 route: Yenikapi to Haciosman. This route was started in 2000. At present, the route is stretched further to additional 3.5 km at Yenikapi end.
M3 route: Kirazlı ↔ Metrokent–Olimpiyat. This 15.9 km long route covering 11 stoppages was opened in 2013. The route is now being stretched further according to the latest plan.
M4 route: Kadıköy ↔ Kartal. This route covers 16 stations. It is opened since 2012 and is being extended further to 5.2 km on the south-eastern end.
M6 route: Levent ↔ Boğaziçi Üniversitesi/Hisarüstü. Levent (connecting point to M2 line), Nispetiye, Etiler, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi (Hisarüstü) are the stops covered in this line.
New routes M5, M7 and M8 are being constructed. M5 and M7 lines will open in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
M5 route and M7 Route are proposed to be built on the Asian and European proximity of Istanbul, respectively.
Istanbul Metro Fares, Tickets & Cards
You can pay the fare for Istanbul Metro with tokens or cards. One ticket for all kinds of transports, known as Akbil ticket, is also available. The cost of a Token for metro is 4TL.
Whereas, the cost of one full fare on the electronic ticket (Akbil ticket) is 2.30 TL. The student fare for the electronic ticket (Akbil ticket) is 1.15 TL and the discounted fare is equivalent to 1.65 TL.
Disabled people get to travel for free.

Istanbul Metro Parking
The park and ride facilities are available for metro riders at each metro station. Parking gates may be closed at some parking area between 9am to 4 pm. You can make a free call and request the gate to be opened.
Istanbul Metro Rules and Tips
Bicycles can be taken on board, although they are subject to certain conditions. One cannot take a large non-foldable bicycle during peak hours, during non peak hours there is free access for these non-foldable bicycles. Small, not so dangerous pets can be taken on the metro train provided it’s not poisonous. The disabled and visually impaired are also allowed an exception with guide dogs. Photography and videography without prior permission is prohibited.
