Brief History

Long Beach Transit History

Long Beach Transit began in 1963, when the Articles of Incorporation for the Long Beach Public Transportation Company were approved. The agency started with 25 buses and soon reorganized local transit service in Long Beach and surrounding communities.

The system grew quickly. The fleet doubled in 1964, red double-decker buses from London appeared in 1967, and by the end of 1969 the fleet had reached 107 buses. In 1974, a new administration building opened at Anaheim Street and Cherry Avenue, and the first electric-battery powered bus entered service.

LBT expanded beyond fixed-route buses as well. Dial-A-Lift began serving riders with disabilities in 1975, before the Americans with Disabilities Act. The company became Long Beach Transit in 1978, and the Transit Mall in Downtown Long Beach opened in 1982.

Later expansion brought new facilities and services. Jackson Transit Center opened in 1998, AquaLink water taxi service began in 2001, and Passport buses replaced the earlier Runabout service. LBT later introduced hybrid, compressed natural gas, and battery-electric buses, along with programs such as U-Pass, Museum Express, and Galaxy Express.

More recently, LBT has focused on sustainability. The agency pledged to become a zero-emission bus transit system ahead of California’s 2040 goal, and by 2022 its operating fleet consisted entirely of alternatively fueled buses. In 2023, LBT marked 60 years of service, moved administrative staff to new corporate offices, and continued work on facility and fleet expansion.

Today, Long Beach Transit provides public transportation across more than 259 square kilometers, or 100 square miles, in 14 cities, carrying millions of annual boarding customers by bus, water taxi, and demand-responsive paratransit.
