Brief History
Fort Bend County Commissioners Court approved the creation of the Fort Bend County Public Transportation Department in 2005. The goal was to serve the general public, connect urban and rural communities, access rural transit funding, and expand service without adding a financial burden to taxpayers.
Today, the department is known as Fort Bend Transit. Its mission is to provide safe and efficient public transportation while maintaining service quality and customer satisfaction.
In 2006, Sugar Land City Council approved an Interlocal Agreement with Fort Bend County to help support transit services. Fort Bend Transit now operates weekday Commuter Park and Ride and Demand Response services, serving destinations in Fort Bend and Harris Counties.
The agency provides approximately 329,619 annual passenger trips based on data from October 2023 through September 2024.
Future Plans and Service Improvements
Fort Bend Transit is advancing the multi-phase “Better Buses, Brighter Futures” initiative, supported by $13,747,776 (USD) in federal funding. The project focuses on fleet modernization, cleaner fuel, infrastructure upgrades, and long-term reliability.
The grant supports three major improvements: a compressed natural gas fueling station, upgrades to the Rosenberg maintenance facility, and replacement of 13 older gasoline and diesel vehicles with 11 new CNG buses. The changes are expected to reduce emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and lower maintenance costs.
The maintenance facility will be retrofitted with ventilation, gas detection, and fire safety systems to support CNG vehicles. An on-site fueling station is also expected to reduce fueling delays and support future expansion.
Service expansion is part of the plan, including a commuter route to the Houston Energy Corridor and additional Demand Response options for access to jobs, healthcare, education, and childcare.
New and Expanded Routes
Fort Bend Transit has added a new weekday commuter bus service to The Energy Corridor, beginning Monday, October 6, 2025. The route starts at Westpark Park and Ride at 19820 FM 1093 in Richmond and follows a circular path along I-10.

These route updates also relate to broader changes affecting service to the Texas Medical Center, Downtown Houston, and Greenway Plaza.
