Phase I

Phase I was the first big step in building the Delhi Metro system. It included 59 stations across 64.75 km (40.23 miles), with the first sections of the Red, Yellow, and Blue Lines opening between 25 December 2002 and 11 November 2006.

The network started with the Red Line from Shahdara to Tis Hazari, then expanded through additional Red Line sections and early stretches of the Yellow and Blue Lines. Phase I was completed in 2006.

Red Line

The Red Line was the first operational Delhi Metro route. It connects Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) and Rithala, crossing east, central, and northwest Delhi. For many passengers, it remains one of the key city transport corridors.

Its first train timings usually start at 5:30 AM on weekdays. On Sunday, the starting time from Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) is 8:00, while Rithala departs at 5:25 on both weekdays and Sunday. From Dilshad Garden, the first train leaves at 5:30 on both weekdays and Sunday.

Last train timings vary by station and direction. Based on the timetable, services close around 11:00 PM to 11:17 PM from the listed terminals.

Yellow Line

In Phase I, the Yellow Line opened in stages from 20 December 2004 to 3 July 2005, starting with Vishwavidyalaya to Kashmere Gate and later extending to Central Secretariat.

Current operating hours vary slightly by station, but the line generally starts early and runs late. On weekdays, the first train is about 5:50 AM from Samaypur Badli and 5:45 AM from Millennium City Centre Gurugram. Sunday opening hours are similar. The last train from both terminals is typically around 11:00 PM.

The wider operating pattern on the Blue Line follows the broader Delhi Metro schedule, with working hours generally running from about 5:00 AM to 11:30 PM. Actual running time and first departure still vary by station.

Phase II

Phase II expanded the Delhi Metro by 123.3 km (76.61 miles) and 86 stations, adding 10 routes and extensions. Seven were expansions of the original network, while three were new color-coded lines. It also strengthened transportation in the NCR through links to nearby cities in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The first Phase II section opened on 4 June 2008, and the phase was completed on 27 August 2011. After Phases I and II, the system reached 188.05 km (116.85 miles) with 145 stations in service.

Phase II also brought wider capacity changes, including the Yellow Line becoming the first to move from four-coach trains to six- and eight-coach formations. The Metro Museum at Patel Chowk opened on 1 January 2009.

This expansion helped reduce congestion and improved local transport links across Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, and other major destinations.

Red Line

The Red Line remained one of the most important Delhi Metro routes in Phase II, connecting Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) with Rithala through several major interchange stations.

Blue Line

The Blue Line runs between Dwarka Sector 21, Noida Electronic City, and Vaishali. First train departures change by direction and day, so station-level timetable details matter here.

The branch starts from Yamuna Bank and improves access toward Ghaziabad localities while allowing an easy interchange for Noida. Since schedule and opening times can vary by station, it is best to check station-specific details before travel.

Weekday and Sunday service patterns are not always the same, and timings may also shift between peak and non-peak periods.

Green Line

The Green Line opened on 3 April 2010. It has 24 stations and 1 interchange, connecting Kirti Nagar with Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh.

Its usual operating hours are 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM. The first train departs at 5:30 AM, the last train at 11:30 PM, and the typical frequency is 4 minutes. The top speed listed for the line is 80 km/h.

Ticket price: Rs.10 to Rs.60 (about $0.12 to $0.72).

The first stations at the two ends of the route are Kirti Nagar and Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh.

Violet Line

The Violet Line connects Kashmere Gate with Raja Nahar Singh (Ballabhgarh). It serves weekday commuters and Sunday travelers with different first train timings.
