Hangzhou Metro

Hangzhou Subway Information

Although it is only the 17th metro line in the People’s Republic of China, the Hangzhou Metro has only been in operation since 2012. It operates on 3 lines and serves 57 stations in total, with a daily ridership of around one million passengers. It not only serves the city of Hangzhou, but also extends into the suburbs. The current length of the metro, 81.5 km, is only a fraction of what is planned. In fact, if all goes according to plan, the metro will have 8 lines stretching no less than 278 km. The metro has been running for around 4 years now, under the operation of the MTR Corporation (Hangzhou), so the future of the metro looks secure to say the least.

Hangzhou Metro Fare, Ticket and Card

Fares for the Hangzhou Metro system are based on distance. For 4km the ticket costs 2 Yuan. This is actually the starting price for the metro. As the distance increases, so does the price, but by different amounts. If the distance is between 4 and 12 km, 1 yuan is added to the fare for every 4 km travelled. If the distance is between 12-24 km, the fare will be increased by 1 yuan for every 6 km. If the distance is more than 24 km, it is 1 yuan for each additional 8 km.

Disabled people can use the metro for free under certain conditions. Senior citizens aged 70 and above can buy tickets at half price during rush hours and use the metro for free at other times of the day.

Senior citizens aged 60-69 receive a 50% discount on tickets, provided they can show the necessary documentation. Students from secondary schools, vocational schools, etc. enjoy a similar advantage.

There is no minimum age for children to travel free on the metro. However, if the child is less than 1.3 metres tall, he/she can use the metro for free, provided that he/she is travelling with an adult.

Hangzhou Metro Parking

Hangzhou plans to build 41 car parks near metro stations over the next seven years to reduce traffic in suburban areas. There will be 9 car parks along Metro Line 1 and five car parks along Line 2. All the car parks are located on the outskirts of the city and only 500 metres from the metro station. People can leave their cars in the car parks and walk to the metro station.
