Changchun Rail Transit

Background

Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province in China, is one of the country’s major centres and is home to over 6 million people. The city is the country’s most important automotive business centre. Changchun also hosted the 2007 Asian Winter Games. The city’s increasing traffic pressure necessitated a rapid transit system, leading to the creation of the Changchun Rail Transit System in 1939. This system was designed to serve both residents and visitors to the city.

While other Chinese cities were still contemplating the idea, Changchun launched its light rail system. Line 3 was launched on 10 October 2002, with only the section between Changchun Railway Station and Weiguangjieand Station in operation. The line was extended to Changyingshijicheng on 26 December 2006. Line 4, which has been in operation since 30 June 2006, runs between Chechang and Dongdaqiao. On 7 May 2012, Line 4 was extended to Changchun North Station.

Operating Hours

The metro system operates from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, with slight variations depending on the line. Trains run every 4 minutes during peak hours and every 8 minutes during off-peak hours.

Lines and Stations

The light rail system currently consists of two lines: Line 3 and Line 4. Both lines form a loop structure and intersect at Changchun Railway Station. However, interchange between the lines is not possible at this location.

On the south side, the two lines intersect to allow interchange. This is at Linhejie Station on Line 3 and at Weixinglu Station on Line 4. The two stations are connected by a 200 metre long passageway. Despite having different names, these stations are essentially the same.
