Barcelona Metro Information
A metro system that runs mostly underground, the Barcelona Metro system is an extensive network of rapid transit electrified railway lines, consisting of a total of 11 lines. Running through Central Barcelona and the city’s suburbs, the metro system is 144.3 km in length, serving 180 stations in total. Out of the 11 lines, 8 of them are TMB full metro lines and the rest of them being FCG lines. The Barcelona Metro network is operated by not one but two separate companies namely, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and Ferrocarrlis de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC).The network has three driverless lines, namely line 9, line 10 and line 11. The extensive metro system has an annual ridership of 412,583,000 (2012).

Barcelona Metro Timings
From Monday-Thursday and Sundays, the Barcelona Metro functions between 5:00 am in the morning, until midnight. On Fridays and eves of public holidays, it functions between 5:00 am in the morning, until 2:00 am the next morning. Saturday’s seem to be its busiest days, where it begins operation at 5:00 am and runs continuously all night. For the year 2016, on special days such as, 23rd and 30th April, the night of 23-24 June, 14-15 August, 23-24 September and 31st December- 1st January, it begins operations from 5:00 am in the morning and continues running all night.

Barcelona Metro Fares, Tickets and Cards
Passengers using the Barcelona Metro system have two options, they can either purchase single tickets or travel cards.
Single tickets are not purchased very often and cost €2.15. They are valid for a single journey and can be purchased from vending machines or TMB customer service centers.
Travel cards can be purchased for 2,3,5 or 5 days. These cards can be used for unlimited travel for the number of days the card is purchased. They can be used on the metro, bus, trams as well local and regional trains. A 2-day Barcelona travel card can be purchased for €14, a 3-day Barcelona travel card can be purchased for €20.50, a 4-day Barcelona travel card can be purchased for €26.50 and a 5-day Barcelona travel card can be purchased for €32.
Children under the ages of 4 can travel for free.

Barcelona Metro Parking
The Barcelona Metro offers park and ride facilities to the passengers at a cheap rate. Although, the parking space at each station is limited.
Barcelona Metro Rules and Tips
The tickets are inspected by a team of inspectors, if the ticket is found to be invalid, a fine must be paid. Transit of bicycles is allowed in the metro.

Barcelona Metro Lines
Currently the Barcelona Metro has 11 lines, however there are plans of extension to add 2 more lines namely line 12 and line 13. Out of these 11 lines, the TMB operates 8 of them, while the FCG operates the rest of the 3 lines. All the metro lines are recognized by their number and colour.
- L1 – L1 line was opened in 1929 and spans over 20.7km, serving 29 stations. The line operates between Hospital de Bellvitge and Fondo.
- L2 – L2 was opened in 1995 and spans over 13.7km, serving 18 stations. The line operates between Paralel and Badalona Pompeu Fabra.
- L3 – L3 was opened in 1924 and spans over 18.4km, serving 26 stations. The line operates between Zona Universitaria and Trinitat Nova.
- L4 – L4 was opened in 1973 and spans over 17.3km, serving 22 stations. The line operates between Trinitat Nova and La Pau.
- L5 – L5 was opened in 1959 and spans over 19.168 km, serving 26 stations. The line operates between Cornella Centre and Vall d’Hebron.
- L6 – L6 was opened in 1976 and spans 5.3km, serving 9 stations. The line operates between Pl. Catalunya and Reina Elisenda.
- L7 – L7 was opened in 1954 and spans 4.6km serving, 7 stations. The line operates between Pl. Catalunya and Av. Tibidabo.
- L8 – L8 was opened in 2000 and spans 11.2km, serving 11 stations. The line operates between Pl. Espanya Moli’ Nou and Ciutat Cooperativa.
- L9 – L9 was opened in 2009 and spans 7.8km, serving 9 stations. The line operates between La Sagrera and Can Zam.
- L10 – L10 was opened in 2010 and spans 5.5km, serving 6 stations. The line operates between La Sagrera and Gorg.
- L11 – L11 was opened in 2003 and spans 2.1km, serving 5 stations. The line operates between Trinitat Nova and Can Cuias.
The metro operating between Parc de Montjuic and Paral-lel is a part of TMB which was opened in 1928 serving 2 stations.
